4 Ways to Get Awesome Quotes in Your Press Release and Why You Need Them

One of the components of a good press release is a quote from someone involved in the news. An appealing quote can make the press release more interesting to read, and personalize it with that person’s voice.
Not all quotes are created equal. The easiest thing to say — “We’re excited about our news,” — is pretty boring. Here’s how to get a better quote:
1.       Choose the right person for the job. It might be the president of the company, or someone else more involved in whatever your news is.
2.       Give them guidance. Have an idea of what you want the quote to be about, like the motivation for contributing to the charity or starting a new company. That way, the person has a sense of what to write.
3.       Ask if you can make edits. Not everyone is great at coming up with quotes. There may be misspellings, or awkward phrasing. Since you’re writing the press release, you are in charge of making sure the quote is good. Never change it without asking permission.
4.       Write it yourself. Sometimes it’s hard to pin people down to give you a quote, or to get a good one. Write one, then invite the person you’re quoting to modify or approve it.
A quote can be a few sentences — no longer. It should relate to the news in an interesting way, and enhance the release. Avoid cliche words like “happy” or “excited.”
